THE LAIRD O' GRANT
The name GRANT is derived from griantach or in Gaelic Silabh Griantatis. Means "Meadow in the Sun", Refers to a district in Strathspey. In the rein of Alexander 2nd Gregory DeGrant was Sheriff of Invernesses, As was his son Lawrence. That son fought for Wallace and Moray, and acquired land in Strathspey. When Sir Iain Ruadh Grant Was sheriff of Invernesses. He Married Matilda Heiress of GlenCharnie. ( It is now Duthill ). Their eldest son Sir Duncan Grant of Freuchie.
John the Baird, the grandson of Sir Duncan Grant And his Son Sheumas Nam Creach, followers of James the 5th adviser to Mary Queen of Scots. Their Eldest son John Grant 5th Baron . In 1735 Sir Ludovic Grant wed Lady Margaret Olgivie and acquired the Earldom of Seafield. On the death of the 11th Earl in WW1 His Daughter Nina Became countess and owner of Grant Castle, called the Cullen House in Baffles. The Chief of the Clan in 1962 is Sir Donald Patrick Trevor Grant, Baron of Strathspey. The castle is located near Aviemore 30 mile from Spey.
